What is the difference between SASE and SSE?

SSE is the security half of SASE: web gateway, CASB, ZTNA, firewall as a service and related functions. SASE adds the networking half, usually SD-WAN, and delivers both from the cloud.

Do I need single-vendor SASE?

Not always. Single-vendor SASE reduces the number of products and policies to run. Teams with a recent SD-WAN investment sometimes add an SSE first and converge later.

What does single-pass inspection mean?

Traffic is decrypted and inspected once, with every security function applied in that pass. On the pages we read, only Cato uses single-pass wording.

Which SASE platforms list all eight components?

Cato Networks, Netskope and Palo Alto Networks list SD-WAN, SWG, CASB, ZTNA, FWaaS, DLP, RBI and DEM on the pages we read. Fortinet and Zscaler list six; Cisco lists four.

Can I move to SASE in stages?

Yes. Most vendors describe staged adoption. Cato states organizations can adopt its platform incrementally, and several vendors offer their SSE without their SD-WAN.

Can I compare PoP counts between vendors?

Not directly. Cato states 100+ PoPs, Fortinet 200+ PoPs and Netskope 120+ data centers in 80+ regions, each on its own basis. Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler and Cisco give no count on the pages we read.

Which vendors state a private backbone?

Cato states a private global backbone between its PoPs, and Netskope states complete control over its NewEdge infrastructure. Fortinet states Fortinet-owned PoPs but does not describe a backbone between them on the page we read.

Who patches a cloud SASE service?

The vendor patches its own stack and can push protections against new vulnerabilities to all customers. Ask each vendor for its process and any published record.

Does any vendor publish its CVE response times?

Cato publishes a Detect to Protect log of critical CVEs on its Rapid CVE Mitigation page. The other five do not publish a response record on the pages we read.

Why does AI security belong in a SASE evaluation?

AI tool and agent traffic passes through the same inspection point as other traffic, so controls inside the platform can apply one policy to all of it.
